Mississippi River

This stretch of the Mississippi is a working river, not a tidal system, so you're fishing structure and light more than any clock tied to moving water. Snakehead here relate to slack, current-broken pockets — pads, matted grass, laydowns, and brush along the bank where the main flow eases up. They ambush from cover and won't chase far, so the game is putting a bait right on top of them and giving them a reason to react. Early and late in the day, when light is low, fish move shallow and get aggressive along the edges. Once the sun climbs, shift to shaded wood and thicker grass, and don't overlook wind-blown banks where current pushes bait and oxygen into the cover.

Access here is rough — there's no mapped parking within about a mile and a half, and no boat ramp within roughly three miles, so this is really a bank-and-carry or kayak trip for anyone willing to hike or paddle in. Pack light, plan your route in, and treat it like a walk-in spot.

Once you're on fish, keep it simple and weedless: hollow-body frogs and buzzbaits worked over matted cover, chatterbaits along grass edges, and weedless soft plastics punched into thicker mats. Spool up with 40-65 lb braid — you need the muscle to horse them out before they wrap you up.
