Poplar Tree Lake

Poplar Tree Lake fishes like a lot of snakehead water in that the fish give away where they live long before you ever hook one. Look for them tucked into pads, matted grass, and laydown wood, especially in the pockets and edges where that cover meets slightly deeper water. Snakehead in this lake will cruise the surface, roll, and gulp air, so watch for that telltale wake or slurp before you ever make a cast. With no tide pushing water in and out, the lake stays steady day to day, so instead of a tide chart your clock is light and temperature. Push cover hard in the first and last couple hours of daylight, and don't overlook stretches getting stacked by wind, since that blown-in current pulls bait and oxygen right into the grass. Midday in the heat, slide into whatever shade the bank or timber offers and slow down.

Access here leans toward the water itself rather than the bank. There's no mapped parking within about a mile and a half, so wading in on foot isn't realistic. A boat ramp sits close by, about a quarter mile off, making a kayak or small boat the practical way to work the pads and wood methodically without spooking fish from shore.

Rig heavy for this bite. Weedless topwater frogs and buzzbaits worked right across the mats draw the most violent strikes, with chatterbaits and weedless soft plastics as good follow-ups when a fish blows up and misses. Spool up with 40-65 lb braid so you can horse them out of cover the instant they eat.
