Rock River

Giant snakehead in the Rock River behave the way this invasive species does everywhere it's taken hold: they hunt shallow, oxygen-rich cover and ambush from thick vegetation. Look for them tucked into pads, matted grass, and laydown wood along the margins, especially where the current slows and warms. These fish will sit motionless under a mat for long stretches, then explode on anything that crosses their strike zone. Because the Rock River is non-tidal, you're not working around a tide chart here — instead, focus on light and temperature. Early morning and last light are prime, when snakehead push tight to cover and feed aggressively. On windy days, target the wind-blown bank where baitfish get pushed into the grass. In the heat of the day, shade becomes the key variable — shaded pockets under overhanging brush or thick canopy hold fish when the sun is high.

Shore access here is solid, with mapped parking about 0.24 miles from the water, making bank fishing a realistic option if you're willing to walk in and pick your spots. For those wanting to cover more water or slide a kayak into tighter pockets of cover, a boat ramp is mapped roughly 1.67 miles out, giving you a launch point to work the river's slower backwaters and grass lines from the water.

Gear up heavy. Weedless topwater frogs and buzzbaits worked over matted vegetation draw the most explosive strikes, while chatterbaits and weedless soft plastics punched into pockets produce when the topwater bite is slow. Spool up with 40-65 lb braid — snakehead will bury you in cover the second they're hooked, and you need the backbone to horse them out before they wrap around wood or grass.
