Accotink Bay

Accotink Bay fishes like classic snakehead water — a shallow, tidal arm thick with grass edges, lily pads, and fallen timber where these fish like to lay up and ambush. Snakehead here aren't roamers; they sit tight to cover, sunning in the shallows on calm mornings, then sliding into deeper pockets and channel edges as pressure or boat traffic pushes through. Look for any seam where matted grass meets open water, or wood that breaks the current — that's where you'll get bit.

Because the bay is tidal, with the nearest reference station at Marshall Hall about 3 miles off, timing matters. High tide floods the grass and pads, spreading fish out shallow and making them harder to pin down. As the water starts to ebb, snakehead slide off the flats toward the drains and points, and that falling tide is when the bite really turns on — moving bait concentrates fish and triggers reaction strikes.

Shore access is workable, with parking mapped close to the water, roughly 0.12 mile away, letting you walk in and work the bank methodically. For better coverage of the pads and backwater pockets, a kayak or small boat pays off, with a ramp mapped about 0.78 mile out. Stick with weedless frogs, buzzbaits, and chatterbaits over the cover, weedless plastics for skinnier water, and 40-65 lb braid to horse them out of the slop.
