Banning Park pond is a quiet, non-tidal fishery, so you're not chasing a clock here — snakehead behavior is dictated by light and temperature rather than tide movement. Look for them holding tight to pads, matted grass, and any submerged wood along the edges. These fish ambush from cover, so the thicker and nastier looking the vegetation, the better your odds. On breezy days, focus on wind-blown banks where bait gets pushed into the cover and snakehead stack up to feed.

Early morning and last light are your prime windows, when fish push shallow and slash at anything moving through the pads. Midday in summer heat, shift to shaded pockets under overhanging brush or deeper grass edges where they'll hold tight until the sun drops again. Shore access here is easy — parking is mapped right nearby, closest spot only about 0.06 mi from the water, so you can walk up and start working the bank fast. If you'd rather cover more water from a kayak or small boat, there's a ramp mapped about 0.55 mi out.

Tactics stay simple and weedless: walk a hollow-body frog or buzzbait right over the mats, or slow-roll a chatterbait along grass edges. Keep soft plastics weedless too. Spool up with 40-65 lb braid — you need the muscle to horse these fish out of cover once they eat.
