Documented northern snakehead water in Spotsylvania County, Virginia. Rapidan-Upper Rappahannock drainage. 1 USGS specimen record (2013); status: established. Location verified from the USGS Nonindigenous Aquatic Species database.
Hunting Run Reservoir is classic snakehead water โ a quiet, non-tidal creek-fed impoundment where these fish set up shop in the thick stuff and rarely stray far from it. Look for them holding tight to pads, matted grass, laydowns, and any flooded brush along the shoreline breaks. Because there's no tide to plan around, your clock here is light and wind. Dawn and dusk are prime, when snakehead push shallow to cruise the edges of cover and ambush anything that moves. Midday, don't give up โ just shift to shaded pockets under overhanging trees or grass mats, and keep an eye out for wind-blown banks where baitfish get pushed into the cover; that's often where a big fish will show itself with a slow-rolling wake or a surface blowup.
Access is workable but takes a little effort. On foot, the closest mapped parking sits around 2.07 miles from the water, so plan on a walk-in approach if you're fishing from the bank. If you can get a kayak or small boat in, it opens up a lot more of the cover-lined shoreline โ the nearest boat ramp is mapped about 1.27 miles out, and launching lets you quietly slide up on pads and wood that shore-bound anglers can't reach.
Tactics stay simple and proven: walk weedless frogs and buzzbaits right across the mats and grass lines, letting the bait sit after any blowup before setting the hook. Chatterbaits worked along grass edges and weedless soft plastics punched into thicker cover round out the arsenal. Spool up with 40-65 lb braid โ you need it to horse fish out of the slop before they wrap you up. Fish it quiet, fish it patient, and let the cover do the talking.

Coordinates are approximate, for finding the general area. Snakehead is an invasive species โ regulations on catching, keeping, transporting and killing it vary by state and change often. Never move a live snakehead between waters. Always confirm current rules with your state wildlife agency before you fish.
