How to fish Little Hunting Creek

Access, tides & where the fish hold. Pick how you're fishing:

๐ŸŽฃ Fish the tide, not the clock: snakehead pin bait to the grass on the flood, then feed hard as the falling (ebb) tide drains it out of the cover โ€” the last couple hours of the outgoing into low slack is prime.

Little Hunting Creek fishes like a lot of Potomac tidal tributaries โ€” the snakeheads push up into the skinny, weedy backwater on the flood and slide back out as the tide drops. Look for them holding tight to matted grass, lily pads, and any laydown wood along the banks. These fish are ambush predators, so the edges where cover meets a little open water are money, especially early and late in the day when they're up shallow breathing air and sunning.

Because this is a tidal system, timing matters as much as location. High water lets snakeheads slip way back into the flooded grass and pad fields where they're tough to reach and even tougher to draw a strike from. As the tide starts to ebb, that same cover starts draining and funnels baitfish โ€” and snakeheads โ€” toward creek channels and points, concentrating fish and turning on some of the best topwater action of the day. Fishing the last couple hours of the falling tide is a reliable pattern here.

Shore access is workable, with parking mapped close to the water, about 0.22 mile out, so bank-walking the grass lines is realistic. For better coverage, a kayak or small boat helps, with a launch about 1.14 miles away. Either way, throw weedless frogs and buzzbaits over the cover, chatterbaits and weedless soft plastics along edges, and stay on 40-65 lb braid to horse fish out of the slop.
