Occoquan Reservoir

Occoquan Reservoir is classic snakehead water—a big, non-tidal lake where the fish key on structure rather than any moving current. Since there's no tide to plan around, think in terms of light and wind instead: dawn and dusk are prime, when snakehead push shallow to hunt along pads, matted grass, and laydown wood. On bright, calm days they'll slide back into shade or thicker cover, but a stiff wind pushing bait and debris into a bank can turn on a bite at any hour, so don't ignore mid-day if you find a wind-blown pocket of grass or brush.

Shore access here is solid—parking is available nearby, with the closest spot about 0.2 mi from the water, making it realistic to walk in, find a grassy point or shaded pocket, and fish it thoroughly on foot. If you want to cover more water and reach the pads and wood that shore-bound anglers can't, a kayak or small boat is the move—there's a boat ramp mapped nearby, closest about 0.12 mi away, putting you on the water fast.

Once you're in position, keep it simple and weedless. Walk a hollow-body frog or buzzbait across matted vegetation early and late, switch to a chatterbait or weedless soft plastic worked along wood and grass edges when the sun's up, and stay on 40-65 lb braid so you can horse fish out of cover the second they eat.
