Old Merrisach Lake

Old Merrisach Lake is classic snakehead water — non-tidal, so you're not fighting a clock with the water level, just working the light and the wind. These fish sit tight to cover: lily pads, matted grass, laydowns and stickups along the edges. On calm mornings and evenings you'll see them roll or "shark" near the surface, especially where wind has pushed slop and debris into a pocket. In the heat of the day, push back into shaded pockets under overhanging brush or thicker mats where they'll hold tucked up and less willing to chase.

Shore access is workable here, with mapped parking nearby, closest around 1.23 miles from the water, so plan on a bit of a walk-in with your gear. If you want to cover more of the cover-lined shoreline efficiently, a boat or kayak is the better call — there's a boat ramp mapped nearby, closest about 1.24 miles out, which gets you into the pads and grass lines without having to hoof it.

Tactics stay simple and stout. Walk a weedless topwater frog or buzzbait right across the mats and pad edges, especially low light or right after wind stacks debris up. Chatterbaits and weedless soft plastics punched into thicker cover draw reaction strikes too. Spool up with 40-65 lb braid — these fish don't give line back once they're buried in the slop.
