How to fish Pohick Bay

Access, tides & where the fish hold. Pick how you're fishing:

🎣 Fish the tide, not the clock: snakehead pin bait to the grass on the flood, then feed hard as the falling (ebb) tide drains it out of the cover — the last couple hours of the outgoing into low slack is prime.

Pohick Bay is classic snakehead water—shallow, weedy, and lined with the kind of cover these fish love to ambush from. Look for them tucked into pads, matted grass edges, and sunken wood along the bay's fringes, especially where the vegetation meets deeper channel water. Snakehead in tidal bays like this relate heavily to that structure, sliding shallow to hunt as conditions allow and dropping back when the water pulls out.

Since Pohick Bay is tidal (nearest reference station Marshall Hall, about 3.6 miles off), timing matters. High tide pushes snakehead deep into flooded grass and pad fields where they're tough to reach and often reluctant to commit. As the tide starts to fall, baitfish and frogs get flushed out of that cover, and snakehead slide to the edges to intercept them—this ebb window is when the bite really turns on. Fish the last two hours of the falling tide for the most consistent action.

Access here is workable either way you fish it. Bank anglers can use mapped parking about 0.78 mile from the water, while boaters and kayakers have a ramp roughly the same distance out. Once you're on the water, stick to weedless topwater frogs and buzzbaits worked over matted cover, or chatterbaits and weedless soft plastics punched into pockets. Spool up with 40-65 lb braid—you'll need the muscle to horse fish out of the slop once they strike.
