Richmond-area tidal James backwaters increasingly turning up snakehead.
Snakehead in the tidal James behave like ambush predators keyed to structure, and here that means the soft edges of the river rather than open channel. Look for them tucked into matted grass, lily pads, and downed wood along the shallow flats and backwater pockets where the current slows. These fish push shallow to hunt and to gulp air, so any pad field or brushy shoreline with a foot or two of water over it is worth working slowly.
Tide matters more than most anglers expect. On the high, snakehead scatter into flooded grass and shoreline cover, often pushed back into spots that are unreachable at other stages. As the tide starts to fall, that water drains off the flats and funnels baitfish and snakehead alike toward the edges of the cover and into the mouths of small guts and creek arms. That ebb movement concentrates fish and triggers reaction strikes, making the last half of the falling tide the prime window. Check the Chester tide station, about 2.8 miles off, to time your trips.
Shore access exists but is a hike, with mapped parking roughly 1.43 miles from the water’s edge; a boat ramp about 1.45 miles away makes kayak or small boat approaches more practical for covering the pad fields and wood efficiently. Stick with weedless frogs, buzzbaits, chatterbaits, and weedless soft plastics fished on 40-65 lb braid to horse fish out of cover.
