Allen Pond

Allen Pond fishes like most snakehead water in this region — it's a still, non-tidal pond, so you're not working around a clock of tide swings. Instead, focus on light and weather. Snakehead here relate hard to cover: pads, matted grass, laydown wood, and any shady pocket along the bank. Dawn and dusk are prime, when fish slide shallow to ambush, but an overcast, windy day can produce all afternoon, especially where wind pushes bait and stacks slop against the bank. In summer heat, shift your attention to shaded edges and thicker canopy cover where fish hold tight through the middle of the day.

Access here is the tricky part. There's no mapped parking within about a mile and a half of the pond, so if you're walking in with rods, plan on a hike and pack light. Boat or kayak anglers have it easier — there's a ramp mapped roughly 2.3 miles out, which makes launching a small boat or yak the more practical way to cover the pond's cover-heavy shoreline without wearing yourself out on foot.

Tactics stay simple and proven: walk a weedless frog or buzzbait right over the mats and grass, working it slow with pauses. Chatterbaits and weedless soft plastics worked along wood and grass edges also draw reaction strikes. Spool up heavy — 40 to 65 lb braid — because when a snakehead eats in the slop, you need to horse it out fast before it wraps you up.
