How to fish Anacostia River

Access, tides & where the fish hold. Pick how you're fishing:
๐ŸŒŠ Tidal water NOAA Kenilworth Aquatic Garden ยท 0.8 mi
Falling now โ€” next Low tide 9:27 PM (in 4h 46m).
High 2:42 AM ยท 3.3โ€ฒLow 9:26 AM ยท 0.7โ€ฒHigh 3:05 PM ยท 2.9โ€ฒLow 9:27 PM ยท 0.6โ€ฒ
๐ŸŽฃ Fish the tide, not the clock: snakehead pin bait to the grass on the flood, then feed hard as the falling (ebb) tide drains it out of the cover โ€” the last couple hours of the outgoing into low slack is prime.

The Anacostia is tidal water, and that pulse is what dictates where snakehead sit through the day. Look for them tucked into the classic ambush spots โ€” matted grass, lily pads, laydown wood, anything that breaks current and holds shade. On the push of high water they'll slide up into flooded grass and skinny backwater pockets to hunt, sometimes right against the bank in a foot of water. As the tide starts to fall, that's your window โ€” snakehead pull off the skinny cover and stage on the edges of drop-offs, points, and current seams where bait gets flushed out. That ebb flow concentrates fish and turns on some of the most reliable topwater action this river offers, so plan your session around the last two hours of a falling tide if you can.

Shore access is solid here, with mapped parking as close as about 0.27 mi from the water, so you can walk in and cover a good stretch of bank without much trouble. If you want to work the skinnier backwaters and pad fields more thoroughly, a kayak or small boat opens things up โ€” there's a boat ramp mapped roughly 1.2 mi away for launching.

Gear up heavy: 40-65 lb braid, stout rods, and strong hooks, because snakehead bury up in cover the second they're hooked. Weedless topwater frogs and buzzbaits worked over the pads and grass draw violent strikes, while chatterbaits and weedless soft plastics punched through matted vegetation cover the rest.
