Desoto Lake

Desoto Lake is one of those still, non-tidal pieces of water where snakehead settle into a routine and stay put around cover rather than roaming with any current. Look for them tucked into lily pads, matted grass, and laydown wood along the edges. These fish like to sit right on the lip of cover, ambushing anything that crosses the gap between shade and open water. Since there's no tide to plan around, focus on light instead — early morning and last light are prime, and a stiff wind pushing into a grassy bank can turn on a bite in the middle of the day by stacking baitfish and frogs against the cover.

Access here is rough, and that's part of the appeal if you don't mind a walk or a paddle. There's no mapped parking within about a mile and a half, and no boat ramp within roughly three miles, so this is best treated as a bank-and-carry or kayak trip. Plan on hauling a kayak in rather than expecting a formal launch, and wear boots for soft banks.

Once you're on fish, keep it simple and weedless. Walk a hollow-body frog or a buzzbait right over the pads and grass, working it slow and letting pauses sit near any hole in the cover. Chatterbaits and weedless soft plastics worked along wood edges also draw vicious strikes. Spool up with 40 to 65 lb braid — you'll need the muscle to horn these fish out of the slop the second they eat.
