Lane Bayou

Lane Bayou is classic snakehead water — a quiet, non-tidal bay where the fish set up shop in the thick stuff and don't move much until conditions push them. Look for northern snakehead holding tight to lily pads, matted grass, and any laid-down wood along the edges. They'll cruise the margins of cover early and late, then slide back into the shade of overhanging brush or deeper grass mats once the sun gets high. Since there's no tide to plan around, your clock here is light and wind. Dawn and dusk are prime, and any stretch of bank getting pushed by wind that stacks bait and oxygen into the cover is worth working over.

Access is easy either way you fish it. Shore anglers have mapped parking right on top of the water, closest spot about 0.04 mi out, so you can walk up and start working the pads without much of a hike. If you'd rather cover water by kayak or small boat, there's a boat ramp mapped just as close, about 0.04 mi away, making it simple to slide in and idle the bank looking for holding fish.

Go weedless here — topwater frogs and buzzbaits worked slow and twitchy over the mats draw the reaction strikes snakehead are known for, especially in low light. Chatterbaits and weedless soft plastics punched into thicker grass work when the topwater bite is slow. Spool up with 40-65 lb braid; you need the muscle to horse these fish out of cover once they eat. Lane Bayou fishes a lot like the other snakehead spots in the area — Desoto Lake, Horseshoe Lake, Lake Beulah, Lake Whittington, Little Eddy Lake, and the Perry Martin Lake flood waters — so if you find a pattern here, it'll travel.
