Lake Whittington

Lake Whittington is classic snakehead water — non-tidal and steady, so you're not fighting current or timing a swing, just reading cover and light. Snakeheads here sit tight to matted vegetation, lily pads, flooded grass lines, and any sunken wood along the edges. They ambush from that cover and will crash a bait the second it enters their strike zone, so target the thickest, nastiest-looking mats first. Early morning and late evening are the prime windows, when fish push shallow to feed under low light. Through the heat of the day, shift to shaded pockets under overhanging brush or wind-blown banks where baitfish stack up — the wind pushes food and oxygen into those pockets and snakeheads follow.

Access here is rough — there's no mapped parking within about a mile and a half, and no boat ramp within roughly three miles, so this is realistically a bank-and-carry or kayak game. Plan to hike gear in or launch a kayak from an unimproved bank spot rather than expecting a formal ramp.

Once you're on fish, keep it simple and heavy. Weedless topwater frogs and buzzbaits worked right across the matted cover draw the most vicious strikes, and a chatterbait or weedless soft plastic punched into holes in the grass will get bites when the topwater bite slows. Spool up with 40-65 lb braid — you need it to horse fish out of the slop before they wrap you up.
