How to fish Broad Creek

Access, tides & where the fish hold. Pick how you're fishing:
๐ŸŒŠ Tidal water NOAA Alexandria, Va. ยท 4.1 mi
Rising now โ€” next High tide 2:54 PM (in 48m).
High 2:31 AM ยท 3.0โ€ฒLow 9:05 AM ยท 0.8โ€ฒHigh 2:54 PM ยท 2.6โ€ฒLow 9:06 PM ยท 0.7โ€ฒ
๐ŸŽฃ Fish the tide, not the clock: snakehead pin bait to the grass on the flood, then feed hard as the falling (ebb) tide drains it out of the cover โ€” the last couple hours of the outgoing into low slack is prime.

Broad Creek fishes like a lot of the mid-Atlantic's better snakehead water โ€” it's tidal, brackish-influenced, and full of the shallow, junky cover these fish love. Look for pads, matted grass, and laydown wood tucked along the edges. Snakehead push shallow to ambush and sun themselves, especially when the water's calm and warm, so any pocket in the vegetation or shady wood tangle deserves a cast.

Tide matters here. On the high, fish scatter back into flooded grass and softer cover, following the water in to feed. As it turns and starts falling, that's when Broad Creek really turns on โ€” baitfish and frogs get pulled out of the skinny stuff, and snakehead stack up on the last edges of cover to intercept anything getting flushed out. Fishing the last two hours of the ebb is about as reliable a pattern as you'll find on this creek. The nearest tide reference is the Alexandria, Va. station, about 4.1 miles off, so plan around that.

Access is mostly a walk-and-cast or paddle game โ€” mapped parking is roughly 0.7 mile from the water, and the closest boat ramp is about 2.54 miles out, so a kayak covers this creek better than a full-size boat. Stick with weedless topwater frogs, buzzbaits, chatterbaits, and weedless soft plastics on 40-65 lb braid to horse fish out of the slop.

Coordinates are approximate, for finding the general area. Snakehead is an invasive species โ€” regulations on catching, keeping, transporting and killing it vary by state and change often. Never move a live snakehead between waters. Always confirm current rules with your state wildlife agency before you fish.
