Gunpowder River

Gunpowder River fishes like classic snakehead water once you find the right cover. These fish stack up around lily pads, matted grass, and laydown wood, especially in the skinny backwaters and along the tidal margins where sun-warmed shallows hold baitfish. Because the river is tidal, with the nearest NOAA reference at Pond Point on the Bush River about 5.7 miles off, the whole system breathes with the tide, and that rhythm dictates where snakehead sit. On the high, fish push way back into the grass and pads, sometimes into water barely deep enough to cover their backs. As the tide starts to fall, they slide out of that skinny cover toward the edges of channels and drop-offs, and that ebb movement is when the bite really turns on — snakehead key on baitfish getting flushed out of the shallows.

Shore access here is workable, with parking mapped nearby, closest around 0.52 miles from the water, so plan on a short walk with your gear. If you want more water and better boat access, there's a ramp mapped about 0.59 miles away, and a kayak or small boat opens up the backwaters and grass lines that bank guys can't reach.

Rig up with 40-65 lb braid, no exceptions, and throw weedless topwater frogs and buzzbaits right over the matted grass and pads — the topwater blowups are what this fishery is known for. Chatterbaits and weedless soft plastics worked along wood and grass edges close the deal when the topwater bite slows, especially on that falling tide.
