Gunpwder River

The Gunpowder is a tidal river, and that rhythm dictates everything about how snakehead behave here. On the push of the incoming tide, fish slide up into the skinny, cover-choked backs of coves and flooded grass, gorging in newly submerged vegetation. As the tide tops out and starts to fall, snakehead slide back out toward the main channel edges, staging along deeper wood, grass lines, and pad fields — and that ebb is when the bite really fires, since baitfish and frogs get pulled out of the shallows and predators key in hard. Keep an eye on the Pond Point, Bush River station about 6 miles off as a general reference for timing your trips around that outgoing water.

Shore access here is workable, with mapped parking about 0.87 mile from the water, so plan on a short walk with your gear. If you'd rather cover more of the pads, grass, and downed timber this river offers, a boat ramp roughly 0.99 mile away gives you kayak or small boat access to reach the better cover-heavy pockets shore-bound anglers can't touch.

Rig up with 40-65 lb braid, no excuses — these fish bury you in grass and wood. Walk weedless frogs and buzzbaits across the matted vegetation, follow up with a chatterbait or weedless soft plastic worked along the drop-offs on the falling tide.
