How to fish Magothy River

Access, tides & where the fish hold. Pick how you're fishing:
๐ŸŒŠ Tidal water NOAA Stony Creek ยท 3.7 mi
Falling now โ€” next Low tide 7:06 PM (in 5h 1m).
High 1:08 AM ยท 1.7โ€ฒLow 7:45 AM ยท 0.7โ€ฒHigh 12:51 PM ยท 1.3โ€ฒLow 7:06 PM ยท 0.4โ€ฒ
๐ŸŽฃ Fish the tide, not the clock: snakehead pin bait to the grass on the flood, then feed hard as the falling (ebb) tide drains it out of the cover โ€” the last couple hours of the outgoing into low slack is prime.

The Magothy is classic tidal snakehead waterโ€”warm, brackish-fresh flats laced with grass beds, lily pads, and fallen timber where these invasive fish love to ambush. Snakehead here relate heavily to structure; they'll sit motionless under matted vegetation or beside a sunken log, waiting to blow up on anything that swims or crawls overhead. As the river is tidal, with Stony Creek station about 3.7 miles off giving you a solid read on stages, timing matters. High tide pushes fish shallow into the flooded grass and pad fields to feed, while the falling tide pulls them back toward creek mouths and deeper edges, concentrating them and triggering some of the most aggressive strikes of the day. That ebb stage is when a topwater frog dragged across matted cover can get demolished.

Shore access is workable, with mapped parking around 0.35 miles from the water, letting you walk in and work the grass lines on foot. For more mobility, a boat ramp roughly 1.82 miles away opens up the creek arms and deeper pad fields a kayak or small boat can slip into quietly. Either way, come rigged with 40-65 lb braid, weedless frogs and buzzbaits for topside cover, chatterbaits for slightly deeper edges, and weedless soft plastics to punch through the thick stuff.
