๐ŸŽฃ Fish the tide, not the clock: snakehead pin bait to the grass on the flood, then feed hard as the falling (ebb) tide drains it out of the cover โ€” the last couple hours of the outgoing into low slack is prime.

Nanjemoy Creek is classic tidal snakehead water โ€” a winding tributary where the fish tuck up tight against grass mats, lily pads, and downed wood along the shallow margins. Snakehead here don't roam much; they sit and ambush, so your best water is anything with visible cover close to deeper channel edges. On high tide they push way back into the flooded grass and pad fields, often too shallow and tangled to fish effectively. As the tide starts to ebb, that water drains off the flats and funnels bait โ€” and snakehead โ€” back toward the main creek edges and cuts, concentrating fish in reachable pockets. That falling tide window is when the bite really turns on, since the fish are forced out of the thickest cover and into range of a well-placed cast. Check the Riverside station tide times before you go and plan to be on the water as it starts dropping.

Shore access is workable, with mapped parking about 1.72 miles from the water, so pack light and be ready to walk in. If you want more coverage of the snaky backwaters, a kayak or small boat launched from the ramp roughly 2.34 miles away opens up a lot more skinny-water cover. Either way, tie on a weedless frog or buzzbait for working the pads and grass, a chatterbait for edges and wood, and keep a weedless soft plastic rigged as backup. Spool up with 40-65 lb braid โ€” you'll need the muscle to horse fish out of cover the second they eat.

Never move a live snakehead between waters. Always confirm current rules with your state wildlife agency before you fish.
