Oxon Creek

Oxon Creek is classic snakehead water — a tidal system with the kind of skinny, brushy edges these fish love. Look for them tucked into pads, matted grass, and downed wood along the banks, especially where the creek narrows and slows. Snakehead here relate heavily to cover, so target isolated pockets in the grass and shady wood edges rather than open water.

Because Oxon Creek is tidal (nearest reference station is Bellevue, D.C., about 1.4 miles off), tide stage matters a lot. On high water, snakehead push way up into flooded grass and pads, feeding tight to cover. As the tide starts to fall, they slide back out toward the main channel, and that ebb movement is when the bite really turns on — moving fish are aggressive fish, and that outgoing push concentrates them along creek-mouth grass lines and drop-offs.

Shore access is solid, with mapped parking as close as about 0.21 miles from the water, making it easy to walk in and work the banks methodically. If you'd rather cover more skinny water, a boat ramp roughly 1.75 miles away lets you launch a kayak or small boat to slip into backwater pockets bank anglers can't reach. Either way, throw weedless frogs and buzzbaits over the mats, chatterbaits along edges, and weedless soft plastics through wood, all on 40-65 lb braid to horse fish out of cover.
