Piney Run

Piney Run is classic snakehead water even though it doesn't look like much on a map. Being non-tidal, you don't have to worry about a tide chart — instead, watch the wind and the sun. Snakehead here hold tight to whatever cover the creek offers: matted grass, lily pads, laydown wood, and any shady undercut bank. Wind-blown pockets where surface debris piles up against structure are prime, since baitfish stack there and snakehead follow. Early and late in the day, with low light, is when you'll see the most surface activity — cruising fish, rolling, or busting bait right along the edges of cover.

Access here is mostly a shore game. There's mapped parking close to the water, with the nearest spot only about 0.16 mi out, so you can walk in and start working the bank without much of a hike. If you're set on getting a boat or kayak on the water, plan for a carry — there's no formal ramp within about 3 miles, so this is really a bank or hand-launch kayak spot rather than a trailer-boat fishery.

Tactics stay simple and snakehead-specific: weedless topwater frogs and buzzbaits worked slow and twitchy over the pads and grass, especially in that low-light window. When the sun gets high, slow down and probe shaded wood with a chatterbait or weedless soft plastic punched into the thick stuff. Spool up with 40-65 lb braid — you'll need it to horse fish out of the slop once they eat.
