How to fish Sod Run

Access, tides & where the fish hold. Pick how you're fishing:

๐ŸŽฃ Fish the tide, not the clock: snakehead pin bait to the grass on the flood, then feed hard as the falling (ebb) tide drains it out of the cover โ€” the last couple hours of the outgoing into low slack is prime.

Sod Run is classic snakehead water โ€” a tidal creek with the kind of skinny, cover-choked structure these fish love. Look for them tucked into pads, matted grass, and laydown wood along the margins, especially where the creek narrows and warms in the shallows. Snakehead here don't roam much; they sit tight to cover and ambush, so your cast needs to land right in the slop, not near it.

Tide matters a lot on Sod Run. High water pushes fish way back into the flooded grass and pad fields where they're nearly impossible to fish effectively. As the tide starts to fall, snakehead slide out of that skinny cover toward the creek's edges and drains, and that ebb movement is when the bite really turns on โ€” moving water concentrates baitfish and triggers reaction strikes. Plan your trip around the last two hours of the outgoing tide for the most consistent action.

Access is workable but not immediate. Shore anglers should expect mapped parking roughly 1.24 miles from the water, so pack light and be ready to walk. If you're running a kayak or small boat, there's a boat ramp mapped about 1.17 miles away, which opens up more of the creek's cover-lined banks.

Tactics stay simple: weedless topwater frogs and buzzbaits worked slow over the pads and grass, chatterbaits around wood edges, and weedless soft plastics punched into thicker mats. Spool up with 40-65 lb braid โ€” you'll need the muscle to horse fish out of cover before they wrap you up.
