South Prong Wicomico River

South Prong Wicomico River is classic snakehead water — a slow, tidal, weedy system that gives these fish everything they want. Look for them tucked into pockets of grass, lily pads, and downed wood along the margins, especially where sun-warmed shallows meet a bit of current. Snakehead here don't roam open water much; they sit and ambush, so any visible cover is worth a cast before you move on.

Because this stretch is tidal (Salisbury on the Wicomico River is the nearest reference station, less than a mile off), timing matters. High water pushes fish up into the flooded grass and pad fields, making them tough to reach and easy to spook. As the tide starts to fall, snakehead slide back off the vegetation toward creek edges, points, and current seams — that ebb movement is when the bite really turns on, since baitfish and frogs get flushed out with them.

Shore access is workable, with parking mapped roughly a third of a mile from the bank, so plan on a short walk with your gear. If you'd rather cover more water, a boat ramp about 0.95 mi away opens up kayak or small boat access to reach pockets shore anglers can't. Either way, go weedless: topwater frogs and buzzbaits worked over cover, chatterbaits along edges, and weedless soft plastics punched into pads, all on 40-65 lb braid to horse them out before they wrap you up.
