How to fish South River

Access, tides & where the fish hold. Pick how you're fishing:
๐ŸŒŠ Tidal water NOAA Edgewater, South River ยท 0.8 mi
Falling now โ€” next Low tide 5:04 PM (in 2h 59m).
Low 5:43 AM ยท 0.7โ€ฒHigh 10:57 AM ยท 1.1โ€ฒLow 5:04 PM ยท 0.4โ€ฒ
๐ŸŽฃ Fish the tide, not the clock: snakehead pin bait to the grass on the flood, then feed hard as the falling (ebb) tide drains it out of the cover โ€” the last couple hours of the outgoing into low slack is prime.

South River gives up snakeheads to anglers willing to work the skinny water where these fish actually live โ€” thick grass mats, lily pads, and any sunken wood along the shallow flats. Snakeheads are ambush predators here, holding tight to cover and using it both to hide and to hunt. On a tidal system like this, water movement dictates where they sit. High tide pushes them up into flooded grass and shoreline pockets, sometimes so shallow you'll see wakes pushing through skinny cover. As the tide starts to fall, that water drains off the flats and funnels fish back toward defined edges and deeper pockets, concentrating them and triggering some of the most reliable feeding activity of the day. The nearby Edgewater tide station, about 0.8 mi off, is worth checking before you head out so you can time your trip around that ebb.

Shore access is workable, with parking mapped roughly 0.16 mi from the water, close enough to hike in gear without much trouble. If you'd rather cover more grass and pad fields by kayak or boat, there's a ramp about 0.33 mi away that opens up more of the river's cover-heavy stretches.

For tactics, keep it weedless โ€” frogs and buzzbaits walked across matted grass and pads draw vicious blowups, while chatterbaits and weedless soft plastics work well along edges and wood. Spool up with 40-65 lb braid; you'll need the muscle to horse fish out of cover before they bury you in it.

Coordinates are approximate, for finding the general area. Snakehead is an invasive species โ€” regulations on catching, keeping, transporting and killing it vary by state and change often. Never move a live snakehead between waters. Always confirm current rules with your state wildlife agency before you fish.
