St. Marys River

St. Marys River fishes like a lot of the better Chesapeake tidal tributaries for snakehead — the fish stack up wherever there's cover to ambush from, so key on lily pads, matted grass, and downed wood along the shallow edges. These are current-oriented fish once the tide gets moving, sliding into skinny water to hunt as it floods and dropping back toward deeper channel edges and current breaks as it falls.

Because this is tidal water, checking the Piney Point station (about 5.2 miles off) before you go is worth the two minutes. High tide pushes snakehead way up into the grass and pads, sometimes skinny enough you can see wakes. That's a solid sight-fishing window, but the falling tide is when this river really turns on — baitfish get pulled out of the shallows and snakehead set up on the edges to ambush anything getting swept out, so plan your trip around that ebb if you can.

Access-wise, there's mapped parking about 1.58 miles from the water for a shore approach, and a boat ramp roughly 1.59 miles out if you'd rather work it by kayak or small boat, which gives you a lot more coverage over these grass lines and wood.

Gear-wise, keep it simple and weedless: a hollow-body frog or buzzbait worked over the pads and grass, a chatterbait around wood, and weedless soft plastics for follow-up strikes. Spool up with 40-65 lb braid — you need it to horse these fish out of cover the second they eat.
