Wye Mills Creek

Wye Mills Creek fishes like classic snakehead water once you find the cover. These fish key on structure — matted grass, lily pads, and fallen wood along the margins — and they'll sit tight in the shade waiting to ambush. Because it's tidal (the nearest NOAA reference is the Queenstown station, about 5 miles off), water movement dictates everything. On the high, snakeheads push way back into flooded grass and brush, sometimes right up against the bank in skinny water. As the tide starts to fall, they slide out toward creek channels and deeper pockets, and that ebb stage is when the bite really turns on — baitfish get flushed out of the shallows and snakehead feed aggressively in the current seams.

Access here is workable but not overly developed. Shore anglers can find mapped parking roughly 1.35 miles from the water, so plan for a bit of a walk with your gear. If you're running a kayak or small boat, there's a ramp mapped about 1.44 miles out, which opens up a lot more of the grassy flats and wood-strewn banks that are tough to reach on foot.

Tactics stay simple and proven: weedless topwater frogs and buzzbaits worked over the pads and grass, chatterbaits along wood edges, and weedless soft plastics punched into thicker cover. Spool up with 40-65 lb braid — you'll need the muscle to horse these fish out of cover once they eat.
